Athens City Schools is one of twenty-four Alabama school systems recognized for meeting the needs of families choosing schools for their children. The “What Parents Want Award” chosen by SchoolMatch of Columbus, Ohio, recognizes systems that meet standards of excellence in the following criteria:

  • Competitive academic test scores
  • Accreditation
  • Recognition for excellence by a national foundation of theU.S.Department of Education
  • Above national average instructional expenditures
  • Above national average expenditures for library/media services
  • Small class sizes
  • Availability of programs at the secondary level

 Brookhill Elementary Schoolwas selected by Redbook magazine as one of “America’s Best Schools”.

 Athens Middle Schoolis one of a select few middle schools in Alabama to participate in the 21st Century Learning Initiative co-sponsored by Microsoft and Alabama Best Practices Center.

 Julian Newman Elementary received the President’s National School of Excellence Award.

 In the past five years eight students named as National Merit Scholarship Finalist, Semi-Finalist, or Commended Student.

 Athens High SchoolTechnology Student Association received the National Program of the Year Award.

Eleven Athens City teachers achieve National Board Certification.

Athens Elementary School named as Torch Bearer School.

Athens High School Girls' 5-A State Softball Champions.

Athens Middle Schoolselected as a Making Middle Grades Work (MMGW) demonstration site.

Athens High School selected by US News & World Report Bronze and Silver Awards.
